Marsh and Cook (1996) studied the use of Cuisenaire rods as a support for solving word problems with three third grade students with learning disabilities. Teaching with Data Simulations: Teaching with data simulations means giving students opportunities to simulate data in order to answer a particular research question or solve a statistical problem. Yet it has been proven successful with students of virtually any background. However, when planning for educational experiences, teachers need to identify the level of cognitive processing they want to engage and select the technique that best encourages that level of thinking (Lasley, Matczynski, & Rowley, 2002).

Another parent told me she absolutely hated our math curriculum until she went to a dyslexia conference, and then it all made sense (?) I have been bothered by a lot of the hysteria and misinformation I have read about Common Core. Rabelais described how the student Gargantua learned about the world and what is in it. By using cognitive models as guides in our mathematical teaching in ways that our writing colleagues have long done in composition, we can move students to deeper levels of understanding of mathematics.
