The more students get to “play" with their math, the better they will learn. Invite parents/family members of your students or members of the community who work in an area that can be meaningfully applied to the concept/skill or strategy and ask them to show how they use the concept/skill/strategy in their work. Fourth, be sure students have the background necessary to be successful in the lesson. Think/Pair/Share – Students learn to speak English by speaking English, but it is often counterproductive to ask English language learners to read passages or give descriptions to the entire class. It seems to be particularly helpful for students who don’t know all their facts that well (ladder helps them to find the GCF more easily) or for when a GCF might not be as easy to think of (for example, GCF of 42 and 56 is 14 – most students automatically think it’s 7, but the ladder method helps them to determine that it’s 14).

Sometimes, I'm in the big theater with 140 students and manage to pull it off in there too (just not as much group work.) I estimate that I've done my Survivor Algebra gig with a few thousand students, so far. Suppose you start with some examples of primitive Pythagorean triples.
