Thanks to Wagner's prestige in advanced art circles, and thanks to Nietzsche's own adoption of Schopenhauer's theory of music (minus the pessimism) in The Birth of Tragedy of 1872 (a book that became the bible for many artists around 1900), the romantic idea of absolute music maintained its full credibility through the first decade of the twentieth century. e The Cold War of Mimesis and Abstraction Today, we are still making music under the premises of the post-1800 paradigm. But the paradigm, involving as it does a competition between two distinct views of the aims of music-making, is inherently unstable and did not survive the First World War intact.
The mimetic idea was best served by means of the essentially texted instrumentally accompanied vocal melody of the secular genre of opera. 32 33 The new paradigm fundamentally reconfigured the relationship between our two ideal types of art and popular music. The affinities between abstract and art music, on the one hand, and mimetic and popular music, on the other, are systematic. Mimetic music, music that represents and amplifies the passions of the singing personage, calls for the popular mode of hearing in which the listener passively identifies with the personage at any given moment, and it favors the popular mode of existence of music as a performed process in real time.
